Speculative Assemblies constructs spatial thought through speculation and assembled relations.

why speculative assemblies...

Speculative Assemblies begins from a simple disturbance -- architecture is too often reduced to the building. Not always by architects themselves, but by the systems that surround architectural production: the brief, the commission, the portfolio, the software workflow, the final render, the planning document, the institutional review, the built object as proof. Within these systems, architecture is expected to arrive, resolve, explain itself, and become legible as a complete proposal.

Yet architectural thought often begins before this point. It begins in relations... fog entering a corridor, a sentence hovering over an image, a stairwell returning its own echo, a drawing that refuses clarity, a room remembered incorrectly, a plastic chair under fluorescent light, a mirror producing a passage that is not there. These are not yet buildings, but they are already architectural. They organise perception, construct relations between bodies and atmospheres, and produce ways of thinking spatially.

Speculative Assemblies emerges from this territory, the point at which architecture has not yet become an object, and perhaps does not need to. It is a design research lab exploring how architecture can operate as an open field of relations. This is not a rejection of buildings, nor a move outside architecture, but a refusal to accept building as the only validation of architectural thought.

The speculative dimension of the work allows architecture to remain open, provisional, unstable, and imaginative. It begins with propositions, uncertainties, and impossible questions. The assembly gives those questions material and relational force. It brings things together, constructs encounters, and tests relations through drawing, film, sound, writing, atmosphere, time, and space.

A speculation opens a question.
An assembly brings that question into relation with things.
Together, they form a way of working.

The lab works through two intertwined modes:

Speculations are conceptual relational propositions.

Assemblies are the experimental construction of relations.
